Free speech therapy as part of a research study

The Psycholinguistics, Aphasia and Modulation Lab, led by Adam Buchwald, is recruiting people with aphasia or apraxia for a research study.

“Adam’s Lab” as it is informally called, has a long history of graduate students who have volunteered with IAM.

This research looks at the effect of mild electrical stimulation to the scalp (also called tDCS) on the effectiveness of therapy.

Who can participate:

  • Individuals with aphasia/apraxia following stroke
  • English is primary language
  • Difficulty producing speech

Therapy would take place in the lab, which is located at New York University in Manhattan.

This research is funded by the National Institute of Health.

Starting October 23, 2023, IAM will start a new bilingual group in Korean

Do you know someone with aphasia whose first language is Korean? Or Korean is the language that they use the most in day to day life?

IAM is starting a new bilingual Korean group on October 23. The group will meet every two weeks on Zoom.

Aphasia Collage
by Nancy Garrity,
IAM Participant

This is a mixed media collage,
6 inches high and 7 1/2 inches wide.
It does not have a frame.
Here is what the artist says about the work:
“The past few years I have used making collages as a way to express my feelings.  I had a stroke this summer so in the fall I looked through my stash of “stuff” and found the “hopeful, healthy, happy card”.  From there I cut the words apart and worked to put them back together – just as I felt the stroke had broken me apart.  I built step by step until I was satisfied that it was complete and expressed my feelings. It wasn’t until I was asked what the buttons stood for that I thought about why they were there. Adding them was the last step.  “Hopeful Healthy” seemed alone and needed containing so I put the buttons around it.  As I see it now, the buttons stand for all of the people who have helped to put me back together.”
Thank you, Nancy, for
sharing your creativity!
